Many disabilities can affect behaviour in unique and challenging ways. Positive Behaviour Support is a way of working with people with disabilities to improve their life by addressing challenging behaviours.
Challenging behaviour means behaviour that is often complex, unpredictable and difficult to understand. Challenging behaviours are often misread, but with the right environment and the right support, can be reduced or stopped.
Positive Behaviour Support focuses on understanding why a child is behaving in this way and working out how their needs can be met without using challenging behaviours.
Some common strategies include:
- Helping the child be more easily understood by others through learning communication strategies
- Changing aspects of the child’s environment to make them feel more at ease
- Helping the child to build more meaningful and positive relationships with others
- Providing an encouraging, fun and understanding support environment
Noah’s Behaviour Support Practitioners work with the child, their family and other significant figures in the child’s life, like their teacher or health professionals.
